Threshold Garland is a remix of my Artemisia Ointment featuring whole plant oil infusions of Rosemary, Artemisia Absinthium, Aborescens, and Vulgaris. Rosemary joins the formula this season as the fall box revolves around the death rituals around the Mediterranean, of which Rosemary has long been a participant in. Aromatic plants and resins partake in many aspects of mourning rites from their use in lamentation rituals, to anoint those who passed and those mourning, and as offerings made to accompany the deceased in their journey. In fact, the small spindle/ flask shaped bottles called lachrymatories or tear bottles/ catchers found in Roman and late Greek tombs, that were initially said to be used for mourners to catch their tears, actually contained perfumes and unguents. Ancient Egyptians used Rosemary in their embalming practices and buried the dead with sprigs to protect their souls in the afterlife. Similarly, Ancient Greek and Roman mourners carried sprigs of Rosemary in funeral processions and placed them with the body of the deceased at the burial site—practices that still continue around the Med today.

This ointment is a multifaceted topical with a wide range of applications—pain relief meets reproductive support meets flying ointment. Aids in relieving stress, soreness, and pain—particularly that is rooted in overworked muscles, joints, bones, the menstrual cycle, heartache and feelings of loss. Also wonderful for the everyday soreness of our often-demanding fast paced lives, especially overtired legs and feet. As an aphrodisiac and flying ointment this can also be applied anywhere to lift a dark mood and provide euphoria. Supports dream depth and recall. Calming and euphoric. Personally, this ointment brings me a feeling of connection I find hard to fully explain. Its scent which comes directly from the whole plant infusions and deeply aromatic beeswax is really transportive and a real balm for feelings of longing and alienation so prevalent in our world today. Historically, Artemisias have been chosen to accompany people on long hard journeys—paired with Rosemary this unguent is made with mourning and the journey of death in mind.
